Mars has reached the stars of Cancer and will be moving through the waters of love, compassion, and matters of the heart for a few months. It will move close to Jupiter and Ketu, the south node of the Moon, retrograde, and then clear the stars of Cancer in April 2027. Out of the nine planets we use in Vedic Astrology, Mars is the warrior of the zodiac. Fiery in nature, ruler of both Aries and Scorpio, Mars rules over police and military force, dynamism and athletes. On the inner plane, Mars rules over our ability to set boundaries and our overall relationship with anger and resentment. Mars in nature can be rough and direct when it needs to be, but it also needs to learn to let go and forgive. The quality of Mars that makes one an athlete is similar to the one that gives someone the ability to remain abstinent from relationships on the spiritual path.

Understanding Mars

A strong Mars can give the ability to push past hard things in the world, as well as a tendency to fight and argue. In this way Mars is a very delicate energy, one we both need for our work and for ourselves, ie. the ability to say no when something is not ok, with grace, rather than hold resentments. It is also an energy we have to pacify in our family life and romantic relationships. In Jyotisha we say the best way of dealing with our tendencies is to channel them in a healthy way, meaning if you are Mars strong then it is recommended to do some martial arts like kung fu to fulfil the warrior energy within. In relationships it could show itself as being channelled within a safe sexual life where some roughness is shared between partners, or play, in this way. Mars can give this aspect of volatility and passion. If you think about it, when fire like Mars has to deal with issues of Venus, meaning water, it mixes two very opposite forces. The never ending story of Mars and Venus and opposite forces attract.

In the deity tradition, Mars is represented by both Narasimha, whom we invoke for protection during eclipses, and Lord Hanuman, the monkey God. In my tradition we say monkeys protect one from Mars energies and dark magic

Mangala Dosha is an affliction where Mars causes issues in relationships. If anger keeps arising and arguments are too constant, then the fire of Mars needs to be addressed both in the physical body as a pitta imbalance (lean on Ayurveda) as well as with mantras and pujas. This is the hymn recommended to listen to in the house to pacify Mars, a Vedic mantra invoking the godly qualities of Lord Vishnu in his form of love and protection.

Understanding Debilitation,

Debilitated planets have a way of looking down. We call them fallen, meaning it feels like a part of our life hasn't worked out. The opposite? An exalted planet, which is always looking up. There is excitement. Things feel uplifting.

Mars in Cancer will be debilitated and travelling in close conjunction with Jupiter, shifting the dynamic from a totally debilitated planet to something that has the chance to be reborn and overcome. Jupiter is the planet of getting along, think harmony and peace. In opposite to Mars, Jupiter loves the home of the heart and the waters of Cancer. In this placement it is exalted. So while Mars is fallen, Jupiter is excited. And while Mars says "this isn't ok with me, I will hold onto those resentments," Jupiter says "forgive and choose happiness." In Vedic astrology we say both energies will be equally at play. Something wonderful and exciting may be coming to life while also requiring us to let go of something else, or accept that in order to reach what makes us happy, something had to fall off first. One door closes, another opens.

This combination is taking place in Cancer meaning it will give birth to parivartana planetary exchanges. During the next few months, dont be so quick to feel like everything is falling apart ... because in one way or another it may suddenly turn around. Something unexpected might come out of this situation. Don't be too quick to judge things over the next few months let it all play out and don't loose faith that something could actually work out in its own mysterious ways.

Mars and Jupiter will remain in close conjunction for a few months, in between Leo and Cancer, forward and retrograding, like a very divine dance.

The Begining of Mars in Cancer takes place during a very special time in the vedic calendar called Pitri Paksha, two weeks that begin on a Full Moon and End on a new Moon where the ancestors are said to come check on us and sometimes give us a little scold too.
